  18.  THE DETECTIVE:
  19.  
  20.      o  The path name size has been changed from 64 to 128
  21.         characters.  This has been done to accomodate the Novell
  22.         Netware feature that provides for path names up to 128
  23.         characters.

  25.      o  The number of paths that the program can handle has been
  26.         changed from 1024 to roughly 2500.  This number is variable
  27.         depending on the amount of free storage available.  The
  28.         program will allocate all available memory to the table
  29.         that stores path names.  With 512k free memory, this will
  30.         top out around 2500.

  32.      o  The control file format has changed to provide for the
  33.         128 character path name.  See below for information on the
  34.         conversion program.

  38.  THE DETECTIVE LOG:
  39.  
  40.      o  The B-TREE file index routines have been optimized as
  41.         promised.  The indexing routines will allocate buffers
  42.         (not to be confused with DOS buffers) to store indexes
  43.         based on available memory.  The more memory available,
  44.         the faster the database accesses.

  46.      o  The path name size was fixed at 64 characters based on
  47.         DOS's limit.  This has been increased to a maximum of
  48.         128 characters to support the Novell Netware feature
  49.         that provides for path names up to 128 characters.

  51.      o  The path name size stored in the database is now
  52.         variable.  When the database is first loaded or when
  53.         purging the database is done, you can (or must) specify
  54.         the length of the path.  Most non-network users can get
  55.         by with a path name size of 20 to 30 characters.  Users
  56.         of Novell Netware may need a path size of 64 to 128
  57.         characters depending on how their network is structered.
  58.         The programs will scan the files to determine the
  59.         minimum possible size.  If a path is later encountered
  60.         that is bigger than that defined in the database, you
  61.         can reorganize the database while making the path size
  62.         larger.

  65.  For current users of our products, we have conversion programs
  66.  that will convert your current DETECTIVE LOG files and DETECTIVE
  67.  control file to their new formats.  RELEASE 3.1 PROGRAMS WILL
  68.  NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY UNLESS THE FILES THEY USE AND CREATE ARE
  69.  CONVERTED!!!

  71.  The conversion programs are available free of charge from our
  72.  bulletin board service.  The phone number of our BBS is
  73.  (414) 241-9125.  It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with
  74.  periodic down time for maintenance.  Make sure to set your
  75.  communcations parameters to 9066,N,8,1.

  87.  Release 3.0 of "THE DETECTIVE" has had virtually no changes made.
  88.  However, THE DETECTIVE LOG has been added to the product line. The
  89.  Log feature consists of several programs written in Turbo C that
  90.  will maintain a history, for as long as you like, of all file
  91.  changes.  A summary of the features in the LOG is as follows:
  92.  
  93.       o  Browse and search for files in history based on file name
  94.          and extension (wildcards accepted), path name (wildcards
  95.          accepted), from and to log date, additions, changes, or
  96.          deletions, and displayed in either path or file name
  97.          sequences.
  98.  
  99.       o  Ability to maintain comments for any file revision in
  100.          history.
  101.  
  102.       o  Ability to print files and optionally their comments with
  103.          the same selectivity as the browse feature.
  104.  
  105.       o  Graphically display disk space usage (requires a graphics
  106.          card).

  108.       o  Utilities to delete old records, reorganize, and re-index
  109.          databases.

  111.       o  Color and monochrome display, context sensative help, and
  112.          pop up windows for a very elegant appearance and feel.

  116.  The changes made to THE DETECTIVE were for a more gracefull exit,
  117.  nothing more.  Also, release 3.0 is totaly compatible with
  118.  release 2.0.  THE DETECTIVE LOG will also read files created by
  119.  release 2.0 of THE DETECTIVE.  If you have not yet seen what the
  120.  LOG feature provides, you may call our bulletin board system at
  121.  (414) 241-9125, 9600,N,8,1 to download the shareware version. The
  122.  shareware version of THE DETECTIVE LOG, like THE DETECTIVE, will
  123.  not process any files in root directories.

  135.  Release 2.0 of "THE DETECTIVE" has been greatly enhanced to provide:
  136.  
  137.      - Sub-directory inclusions and exclusions
  138.      - File tracking and CRC checking in the same run
  139.      - Multiple scenario control files
  140.      - User defined file names
  141.      - Increased limits of 1024 directories and 4096 files per
  142.        directory
  143.      - Support for an unlimited number of drives (A through Z)
  144.      - Complete network support to handle locked files
  145.      - 20% to 30% increase in speed
  146.  
  147.  You should read the documentation prior to using the new version, but
  148.  since help information is displayed throughout the entry process, it
  149.  may not be necessary.

  151.  To upgrade to this release, you should run "THE DETECTIVE" (or "VIRUS
  152.  DETECTER" as it was named earlier) one last time if needed, delete all
  153.  old files, and copy the new version in its place.
